Step 9. You should see a blue highlighted box with a random COM number.  If you don’t see it, you have to install the proper Note 5 USB drivers.  Install it and try reconnecting the microUSB cable, you should see it. (If you have trouble, try rebooting your computer after driver installation, also try using different USB port/cable and DO NOT USE a USB HUB.)

Step 10. Choose “AP” then choose the TWRP file you downloaded earlier.

Step 11. Hit Start and as soon as you see “PASS!” and your phone reboots, hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 10 seconds until you enter TWRP.  If you miss this step, you can power down your phone and do the buttons to get into TWRP.

I just had exactly the same prob as you, all I did was:

      1) Boot into TWRP
      2) Go to Advanced tab
      3) Go to ADB Sideload
      4) Follow the instructions it provides, for me, I loaded SuperSU v2.74 only.
      5) Reboot into system, and it just works like magic. I have no idea why, though.

      Maybe you can try it.

  8. A Guy who wants to root his phone says:

Well, I followed exactly everything you did all the way to Step 16, and then I found out that my laptop no longer detects my Galaxy Note 5 (its name turns into some other name in Device Manager, and nothing in File Explorer), and what’s worse is that it wouldn’t boot into system anymore….

    Model: SM-N9208

    Any suggestion?
(At the same time, downloading the firmware[Maybe it will help?], hope that everything will be alright…)

  9. A Guy who wants to root his phone says:

What a relief, couldn’t believe I fix it myself, fortunately it is not like my previous phone, which I tried every method that I could think of and still failed to boot into system, this time all I did was using ADB sideload to load SuperSU into my phone, I haven’t done any research on ADB though, I just follow what it said…

Well, Thanks for the article, it helps a lot!

  10. Mangolinux says:

Maybe you can try factory reset and then redo everything again.

Or you can go online search, I saw lots of posts about that actually.

Was able to root my Note 5 running on Marshmallow 6.01 version by following the steps provided above. The root was successful even though I skipped the part on wiping the storage of my Note 5. I just went ahead straight on installing the no-verify-opt-encrypt.zip and the SuperSU zip file. After reboot, I just had to manually install SuperSU and when I checked the Root, it was all running perfectly fine on Root Access! Thanks Sir Max Lee!

Max If I downgrade my Verizon Note 5 back to 5.1.1 can I use this root method on it?

  36. geniuz says:

The TWRP file is outdated and might cause a soft-ricked. In case this happened, just flash the lastest TWRP 3.0 and for root flash the lastest SUPERSU.ZIP (Beta is fine). No wipe is necessity.

  38. DT says:

Excellent. Worked a treat on my 2nd attempt. Important to enable developer mode and I also enabled USB debugging. I did not do a full wipe – just a a cache wipe. Worked perfectly. My first attempt failed as I did not do these things. I initially used a USB 3.1 port and did not install latest Note 5 USB Driver but not sure if those were an issue. After failed 1st attempt I had to use Kies 3 and original ROM otherwise I could not even boot! Thank you for the great instructions.

  39. DT says:

After 1st attempt I got the “FRP lock” issue appearing in red text even when the phone was just on charge and not started up.

  40. DT says:
