How to Install Android 8.1 Oreo + Root for Galaxy Note 5/S6 Edge Plus!

Most likely, Samsung will not update the Galaxy Note 5/S6 Edge Plus beyond Android 7.0 Nougat but there is an easy way to upgrade and install Android 8.1 Oreo + root by installing a custom ROM.  This is the Lineage OS 15.1 custom ROM for the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus, which works quite well even for a beta version.

The following models are supported:

  • Galaxy Note 5 SM-N920C, SM-N920CD, SM-N920G, SM-N920I, Canadian SM-N920W8, T-Mobile SM-N920T, Korean SM-N920K, SM-N920L, SM-N920S, Chinese SM-N9200, SM-N9208
  • Galaxy S6 Edge Plus SM-G928F, SM-G928FD, SM-G928G, SM-G928I, Canadian SM-G928W8, T-Mobile SM-G928T, Korean SM-G928K, SM-G928L, SM-G928S, Chinese SM-G9280, SM-G9287, SM-G9287C

In my few days of testing, everything works except for NFC, which does not work yet.  Performance is very good along with excellent battery life.  Since this is an AOSP ROM(What is AOSP?), you will not get any compatibility with TouchWiz apps.  S-Pen still works 100% but since many of S-Pen apps are TouchWiz, you will need to resort to a third party app, which work fine for drawing and jotting notes.  Fingerprint security works flawless along with Face Unlock, which can be a plus for those who want faster unlock.

You will get all the standard features of latest Android 8.1 Oreo with a few customization provided by Lineage OS.  Option for soft keys(navigation buttons on-screen) is also very nice for those of you used to on-screen buttons although disabling hardware keys is not an option yet.  Overall, this is a great way to upgrade your Note 5 or S6 Edge Plus to Android 8.1 Oreo and revamp your phone to latest OS.  One of the biggest problems with Samsung is that they stop updating after a few years and this is probably a great way to still get those Android updates so definitely give it a go if your OS is getting slow!
